Sydney Central Station

February, 2025- This historic renewal and expansion project, costing A $955 million, was led jointly by John McAslan + Partners and Woods Bagot for the developer Laing O’Rourke. The revival of this 115-year-old station is a pivotal milestone within the larger transformation of Sydney’s public transport infrastructure. With 96 percent of Sydney’s train services concentrated through Central Station, the hub forms the backbone of the metropolitan rail network. Upgrades to the original Walter Vernon designed station was part of the modernization process. The station sees about 270,000 commuters per day but the infrastructure can now handle up to 450,000 commuters a day. Structural members consumed 1,200 metric tons of steel, with galvanized coated steel amounting to 700 tonnes of that. The vaulted ceilings of the new concourse are clad in powder-coated aluminum.
