Above: The KASTOssb is suitable for challenging cutting applications involving solid material, tubes, profiles and bundles.
Proven in practice for years and, now further developed: The new KASTOssb vertical bandsaw series is more compact, energy-efficient, and easier to access. Featuring an electromechanical saw feed and the new KASTO ProControl system, this series enhances ease of use and offers greater transparency.
Since 1985, the KASTOssb has become known for its reliable sawing technology, outstanding versatility, and robust machine quality. The latest development of the new heavy-duty, high-performance KASTOssb automatic bandsaw draws on four decades of practical experience. This is particularly evident in the saw feed system: the engineering design team replaced the previous hydraulic actuation with servomotors. This electromechanical drive consumes power only when cutting is actually performed. The result: a more energy-efficient and quieter production process. Automatic feed control is included as a standard feature. With KASTOrespond, the system automatically adjusts parameters to suit each application, helping to optimise cutting times.
Chip conveyor: flexible and space-saving
The new chip conveyor can be installed on either the right or left side, allowing the customer to specify the preferred discharge direction when placing an order. This feature provides greater flexibility when integrating the conveyor into existing on-site production processes. Its upward-conveying design minimises the risk of blockages, complies with current safety standards, and reduces coolant carryover. Depending on the application, discharge heights of 600 mm or 1,050 mm are available.
For easier installation and removal, the conveyor is now equipped with rollers. The new design allows for a 30-degree rotation when the conveyor is installed on the left side, making it easier to pull out. The modification reduces the space required for removal (when the chip conveyor discharge height is 600 mm) from 3.6 metres to 2.9 metres. This enhancement allows users of this already compact machine to save even more valuable space on the factory floor.
Improved maintenance and accessibility
Partitioned panels and hinged rear doors offer easier access to the bandsaw blade and other key components while allowing for more space-efficient installation. A new front inspection window provides a clear view of the working area, roller conveyor, and material infeed.
Intelligent software saves time and material
The newly launched KASTO ProControl generation of control systems enhances operation efficiency, intuitiveness, and transparency. The dashboard and Simple Mode are designed to assist with daily tasks, while features such as the material library, cutting plan, and intelligent cutting optimisation help save both time and materials. Additionally, diagnostic and analysis tools help pinpoint faults more quickly, reducing downtime.
Excellent sawing precision saves material and time
The new programming system also improves positioning and cutting precision. Machines in the KASTOwin 107 series, equipped with ProControl, have demonstrated exceptional consistency in cutting lengths within the specified tolerance range. This level of precision is also achieved with the new KASTOssb: in a series of measurements performed on a KASTOssb FC 2.6, using C45 round bar stock with a diameter of 90 mm and a target cut length of 10.00 mm, the average cutting length was 10.011 mm, with a standard deviation of 0.048 mm. These precise and reproducible cut lengths allow for smaller cutting allowances, leading to savings in both material and time during downstream processing operations.
Low-vibration and versatile design
A significant factor contributing to high cutting quality and productivity is effective vibration management. Consequently, a proven core element of the KASTOssb series that remains unchanged is the mineral cast saw head. This material is known for its excellent damping properties, which effectively reduce vibrations. The advantage is particularly important during bundle cutting, especially when cutting tubes and profiles with diameters of up to 260 mm, as well as when using carbide bandsaw blades. These blades are now explicitly included in the range of applications. Furthermore, there is an option to use a 34 mm-wide band.
From a standalone machine to a fully automated line
The KASTOssb is available in two versions: the AC 2.6, which can be used as a standalone unit or with a roller conveyor, and the FC 2.6, which features automated material loading along with infeed and outfeed capabilities. The FC version can also be expanded with KASTOsort for automated robotic handling and integration with storage systems. These options offer a compact and scalable automation platform, making it suitable even for mid-sized companies.
Sawing, storage, machining – all combined in KASTO’s new compact sawing centre
The KASTOssb can be seamlessly integrated into the new, fully automated KASTOcenter compact sawing centre. This modular system combines a tower storage unit, robotic loading and unloading, sawing, and downstream machining. Together, these features create a system capable of 24/7 operation within a minimal footprint.
All of the new products will be showcased live at the AMB trade fair, to be held from 15th to 19th September in Stuttgart, on the Kasto stand B21/24 in Hall 8.
