URBAN STEEL EXPO 2027: OFFICIAL WELDART WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP ASSOCIATED WITH IIW INTRODUCES ITS FIRST INTERNATIONAL AMBASSADORS

The Ultimate World of Cutting and Welding in Düsseldorf, Germany, will host the finals of the Official WeldArt World Championship associated with IIW (International Institute of Welding). In the run-up to the event, the championship’s international ambassador network continues to grow: More than 45 well-known figures from the welding community are supporting the competition on its journey to USE 2027.

Leading figures from the welding community across seven world regions have already joined the global ambassador network. Together, they represent a social media reach of more than ten million followers. Among the network's headline ambassadors are WELD.COM and WeldPorn, two of the best-known platforms within the international welding community. Content creators, professional welders and industry personalities are serving as ambassadors, raising the Championship’s international profile through their networks and social media channels. The network is complemented by an international jury of renowned welding experts and industry leaders.

As the new international trade fair for welding, cutting and related technologies, USE – The Ultimate World of Cutting and Welding will bring together companies, innovations, technologies and industry decision-makers from around the world. By hosting the Official WeldArt World Championship, the exhibition program gains an international highlight that complements USE's strong technology and business focus with the creative diversity of the global welding community while reinforcing its modern, experience-oriented trade fair concept.

Daniel Ryfisch, Director USE, wire & Tube, Metal Forming & Fabrication Technologies, Messe Düsseldorf, comments: “With the Finals of the Official WeldArt World Championship associated with IIW, USE 2027 will feature an exceptional international competition. The fact that some of the best-known voices in the global welding community have already joined the initiative as ambassadors demonstrates the strong international response the Championship is receiving well ahead of its finals. We are looking forward to presenting this unique format to an international trade audience at USE 2027 in Düsseldorf for the first time.”

SPS Companies, Inc. is a family of privately held steel distribution, processing, and logistics companies founded in 1933 and headquartered in Manhattan, Kan. Hydro brings high-recycled aluminium to General Motors EV with Hydro CIRCAL

Hydro brings high-recycled aluminium to General Motors EV with Hydro CIRCAL

General Motors’ Cadillac OPTIQ will feature a front bumper system made with Hydro CIRCAL, an advanced aluminium alloy composed of at least 75 percent post‑consumer scrap produced at Hydro’s newest U.S. recycling facility in Cassopolis, Michigan.

Hydro, automotive supplier Shape Corp. and General Motors are demonstrating how aluminium from end-of-life products can be recycled and returned to new automotive applications, supporting increased circularity in the mobility sector.

The collaboration marks one of the first U.S. implementations of Hydro CIRCAL in a structural, safety‑critical automotive application.

“By bringing recycled aluminium back into demanding vehicle applications, we can reduce embedded emissions, strengthen material circularity and make better use of the resources already in circulation,” says Duncan Pitchford, Vice President Recycling, Hydro Aluminum Metal.

High-recycled aluminium for automotive applications

Hydro will supply Hydro CIRCAL from its U.S. recycling facility in Cassopolis, Michigan. Shape Corp. will engineer and assemble the front bumper system to GM specifications, with integration into the Cadillac OPTIQ platform.

By sourcing recycled aluminium locally and making it in Michigan, GM strengthens U.S. production and supply chain resilience while demonstrating how regional recycling networks can return valuable materials to new vehicle applications.

Hydro CIRCAL uses aluminium recovered from end-of-life products such as vehicles, windows, doors and electrical cables. The material is remelted and transformed into new aluminium products through Hydro's recycling operations.

The product offers a market-leading carbon footprint of 1.5 kg CO₂e per kg of aluminium, or lower, while meeting demanding automotive requirements for strength, energy absorption, corrosion resistance and formability. The low carbon footprint means Hydro CIRCAL delivers an estimated 70 percent reduction in CO₂ emissions compared to the North American average for primary aluminium production.

How the component is used

The front bumper beam is a structural crash‑management part located at the front of the vehicle, behind the visible bumper cover. It absorbs and distributes impact energy in collisions to help protect passengers, pedestrians and critical EV systems, an application where material choice is essential.

Using Hydro CIRCAL in this part demonstrates that aluminum with high post‑consumer recycled content can meet demanding performance needs while helping lower embedded carbon footprint.
